"When I grow up, I want to be a doctor so that I can help people like the heart doctors helped fix
my heart." -Nick's answer to the judges at the fair king contest.

Nicholas was selected as Little Mr. Brazoria County Fair King in October, 2001. Before being
chosen, Nicholas had to go before two panels of judges. One of these was with the contestants and judges in private.
The other one was on stage before a live audience. When asked what his favorite food was, Nicholas answered, "My Nanny's
homemade chicken soup." This may not have helped with the judge's scoring, but it made extra points with his Nanny,
Cheri Roe.

Nicholas is now ten years old. In March of 2001, an emergency room
doctor treated Nicholas for an upset stomach. He noticed a heart murmur that was previously undetected. In April,
Nicholas went to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston for tests. He had surgery on May 3, 2001, to correct
a hole in the atrium and a cleft in his mitral valve. If you didn't know it, you would think he was like all the other
boys on his soccer and little league teams. However, there's a little problem with the valve that we're still watching.
Nicholas is now taking medication to try to prolong the time before he has to have another surgery to repair or replace his
mitral valve.
